Just as Arizona State’s underclassmen were fire power of its 2017 roster, three of them are making drastic impacts on summer league rosters.

Of the Sun Devils’ 30-player roster, 20 were underclassmen. Rising junior Connor Higgins, and rising sophomores Tre Turner and Spencer Van Scoyoc have most impressed in summer leagues this season.

Hamilton Joes Utility Player Tre Turner

Through 15 games in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Turner has accumulated a .291 average with 11 runs and 11 RBI.

Turner was once a two-sport athlete who planned to play both baseball and football. He was listed off the baseball roster in early February of 2017, then committed to playing solely baseball in early June.

Turner’s running back caliber speed has been displayed in Ohio, as he is second best on the Joes with seven stolen bases and four doubles. He’s also added three triples.

Brewster Whitecaps LHP Connor Higgins

Higgins, who was selected in the 35th round of the MLB draft as the only Sun Devil picked, has fit in nicely in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.

Through a team-high four starts and 19 23 innings, the southpaw has manged a 2.74 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Higgins served his most impressive start against the Orleans Firebirds on June 14, as he tossed five scoreless innings on just two hits and one walk. He kept opposing hitters to a .118 batting average.

With a 1-2 record, Higgins hasn’t been perfect, but his stats say he’s bound to have a strong 2018 performance.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox LHP Spencer Van Scoyoc

With a .90 ERA through 10 innings, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Van Scoyoc has looked rock solid through two starts in the Cape Cod Baseball League this season.

Van Scoyoc’s longest and most polished start came against the Falmouth Commodores when he held the Dores to a .150 opposing batting average over 5 23 innings on one run, three hits, one walk and five strikeouts.

Among ASU returners, Van Scoyoc comes into the 2018 season with the second best ERA at 3.86.
