With the 2018 calendar quickly coming to a close, so is the 2018 ASU Football Season. The Sun Devils outperformed expectations finishing with an overall 7-5 record and second in the Pac-12 South.
ASU now turns their attention to the No. 21 Fresno State Bulldogs for their Dec. 15 matchup in the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Sun Devils are looking for their first bowl win since 2014, and an 8-5 record as they prepare to hit the recruiting trail ahead of spring ball beginning in February.
Dec. 29, 2012: Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl vs. Navy- W: 62-28
Todd Graham’s first season in charge in Tempe was a roller coaster ride ending on a high note. ASU finished the season 7-5, and dominated the Midshipmen in every facet of the game.
Quarterback Taylor Kelly was 17-for-19 and threw for four touchdowns, and running back Marion Grice ran for 159 yards and two scores of his own.
Navy’s triple-option offense was no match for the Sun Devil defense, defensive tackle Will Sutton notched 2.5 sacks as ASU secured the win in the city by the bay.
Dec. 30, 2013 Holiday Bowl vs. Texas Tech- L: 37-23
Something about the stadium formerly known as Qualcomm gives ASU trouble.
The Sun Devils entered the matchup heavily favored over the Red Raiders, and had defeated Texas Tech to begin the season 31-13 at Sun Devil Stadium.
Future Cal quarterback and NFL draft pick Davis Webb, torched the ASU defense all night. Webb was 28-for-41 with four touchdowns and over 400 yards thrown.
While ASU running back D.J. Foster ran for 132 yards and a touchdown, it was the ASU defense that led to a season ending in disappointment.
Dec. 27, 2014 Sun Bowl vs. Duke W: 36-31
The final bowl win of the Todd Graham era. While many ASU fans will remember the 2014 team for what could have been, the Sun Devils secured a W to end their season in El Paso.
Defense was optional for both teams as the Sun Devil rushing attack was exposing the Blue Devils all game.
The running back trio of Foster, Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard were key contributors, as well as the exploits of wide receiver Jaelen Strong.
Strong caught seven passes for 103 yards in his time wearing maroon and gold.
Jan. 2, 2016 TicketCity Cactus Bowl vs. West Virginia L: 43-42
If only Graham had gone for two...
The Sun Devils lost the shootout in heartbreaking fashion as Mountaineer quarterback Styler Howard sliced up the ASU secondary throwing for 532 yards and five touchdowns.
Quarterback Mike Bercovici did everything he could in his last ASU game, throwing for 418 yards and four touchdowns. Bercovici targeted wide receiver Devin Lucien throughout the contest as he came down with nine receptions for 144 yards.
ASU went on to finish the season under .500 at 6-7, as the program never regained traction under Graham’s watch.
Dec. 29, 2017 Sun Bowl vs. North Carolina State L: 52-31
This game was awkward for numerous reasons. The recently fired Graham coached the game as the newly hired Herm Edwards watched from a suite.
ASU turned in a lackluster performance against the Wolfpack in a fitting sendoff that had many shaking their heads.
Quarterback Manny Wilkins struggled with turnovers, as his three interceptions overshadowed his three touchdowns and 352 passing yards.
N.C. State’s defense made life difficult for the ASU offense all night, holding them to 10 points prior to scoring three times in fourth quarter after the game had been long decided.
