Arizona State left-handed senior starter Eli Lingos earned his third Pac-12 win in as many starts, shutting out Washington State, 7-0, with 122 pitches in nine innings Saturday afternoon in Pullman.
Lingos (5-1, 2.02 ERA) allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked just one to steal the Saturday win for the Sun Devils (13-14, 5-3 Pac-12), who had lost twice consecutively in extra inning games to the Cougars (7-15, 3-6) in games prior.
ASU jumped on Washington State early when freshman third baseman Gage Workman knocked in freshman second baseman Alika Williams on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
In the third, senior designated hitter Taylor Lane scored junior center fielder Gage Canning and freshman shortstop Drew Swift on a 2-RBI single, then Lane touched home on a single from sophomore left fielder Myles Denson to take a 4-0 lead.
ASU’s bats then went cold, but Lingos retired 12 straight Washington State batters from the third to the sixth inning. WSU put a runner on in each of final three innings, and couldn’t convert. The Sun Devils, however, tagged on three more runs in the top of the ninth.
Williams was pegged by a pitch with the bases jammed, scoring in Canning, then sophomore Carter Aldrete hit a 2-RBI pinch hit single that sealed the 7-0 win.
The Sun Devils host Cal State Fullerton (10-14) on Tuesday and Wednesday, both at 6:30 p.m., before welcoming USC (13-10, 3-5 Pac-12) to Phoenix Muni for a three-game weekend series.
