It took her 15 innings, 59 batters faced and 208 pitches, but sophomore Giselle 'G' Juarez dominated once again.
No. 7 ASU (33-5, 7-2 Pac-12) played over two full games of softball in order to defeat Oregon State (21-17, 4-8) by a score 2-1 in 15 innings on Sunday.
While innings were a part of the nearly four and a half hour matchup, the Corvallis rain delayed the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The score was 1-0 ASU.
After the delay ended, OSU struck with its first score of the game on a two-out pinch-hit single by sophomore Alyssa Pelegrin.
The OSU tie was followed by seven scoreless extra innings with plenty of opportunities for both teams to score. Over the span, 15 total runners were stranded on base.
Senior outfielder Nichole Chilson would be the hero in the top of the 15th. Her sacrifice-fly to drive in sophomore pinch-runner Brianna ‘Breezy’ Wise would cement the lead for Juarez.
ASU's other run scored off the bat of sophomore shortstop Jade Gortarez when she doubled home freshman second baseman Bella Loomis in the third inning. A separation of runs scored by 12 innings.
Juarez threw her usual best. In the extended start, she allowed nine hits, one run, a season high six walks and 15 strikeouts for her 17th win of the season.
The Sun Devils will return home for a weekend series against the No. 5 Oregon Ducks (32-6, 7-2) starting Friday. The Ducks are currently carrying a six-game winning streak into Tempe after having swept the No. 9 Arizona Wildcats (27-9, 6-6) this past weekend.
