Arizona State: The Sun Devils (22-30, 12-15 Pac-12) return home for the final home series of the year, after a heartbreaking extra-inning loss to Arizona last Saturday. Freshman first baseman Spencer Torkelson and sophomore outfielder Hunter Bishop each had strong showings at the plate. Torkelson now has 25 home runs and is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, a trophy given to the best player in collegiate baseball. Torkelson looks to etch his name in the history books this weekend, as he is one home run away from tying the freshman NCAA Division I single-season freshman home run record and two from the ASU single-season record. Bishop has found more success at the plate in the second part of the season and performed well against the Wildcats collecting five RBIs in their lone win on Friday. Senior left hander Eli Lingos will be making his final start as a Sun Devil this weekend. Lingos has put together a solid career on the hill despite the struggles from the team as a whole. His 7-5 record comes with a 4.10 ERA and 66 strikeouts.
California: The Golden Bears (30-21, 14-13) enter the end of the season featuring one of the best offenses in the country. Sophomore infielder Andrew Vaughn has been a force in the batter’s box in 2018. Also Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, Vaughn has hit .414 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs. Vaughn’s supporting cast is also strong as well, as Cal features three other hitters with batting averages over .325. The Sun Devil pitchers will have their hands full trying to slow down the Golden Bears’ offense. California’s pitching staff has had an average season with high ERA’s from the majority of its starting pitchers. Junior right-hander Aaron Shortridge has been the best pitcher on the staff compiling a record of 4-3 and 3.07 ERA.
