During Saturday’s scrimmage, first team Tillman redshirt senior safety Tyler Whiley left the field on a cart with a suspected leg injury. Despite hopeful thinking, it’s confirmed Whiley will miss all of the 2018 season with a broken ankle. The injury first reported by azcentral.com
Whiley appeared to have his ankle rolled up on during the scrimmage. Fellow redshirt senior Dasmond Tatutalatasi filled in for Whiley’s spot with the starters. For the foreseeable future it’ll be Tatutalatasi with the first team.
Of course, the Sun Devils are still waiting on the return of sophomore Evan Fields, who had been the backup to Whiley all of fall practice. Defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales said on Saturday, Fields is nursing a hamstring string, but should return this upcoming week.
Freshman safety Ely Doyle claimed Tatutalatasi’s spot on the second team defense on Saturday. Gonzales said he still likes the depth at the Tillman spot once Fields returns.
Injuries are bound to happen in the game of football and every team deals with it. This is just the first major blow of the season for the Sun Devils. Between Fields and Tatutalatasi it should be a battle for the starting position left behind by Whiley.
