ASU Football Practice 21

The weather nearly aligned with their Saturday forecast.

Brady Vernon/House of Sparky

As if it were an omen for the Sun Devils, practice began with dark, gray clouds that peeked over the bubble. Then when stretches began, the rain came down. How did the weather affect today’s practice?

Last practice: Tuesday, September 18

Next Practice: Thursday, September 20

Today’s Music: Watch by Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Kanye West

2 Vaults by Tee Grizzley, Lil Yachty

Injury Update:

Tillman safety Dasmond Tautalatasi went straight to the bubble without participating in stretches much like yesterday.

Quarterback Ryan Kelley visited the medical staff prior participating in stretches. After stretches he and a group of players went into the bubble.

Joining Kelley going to the bubble after stretches were defensive back Evan Fields, wide receiver Terrell Chatman and safety Ty Thomas.

What happened:

Offensive coordinator Rob Likens was fired up to start work with his quarterbacks, running backs and centers. Before the quarterbacks arrived, Likens focused specifically with running back Eno Benjamin running routes of either blocks or short passes.

Benjamin and running back Trelon Smith rotated getting reps from quarterbacks Manny Wilkins and Dillon Sterling-Cole.

After stretches, special teams got in 11 on 11 reps starting with kicker Brandon Ruiz practicing different length field goals.

Like yesterday Isaiah Floyd, Ryan Newsome and Brandon Aiyuk got chances to return punts.

The highlight was a single statement made by Herm Edwards during this 11 on 11:

During the special teams portion, the defensive lineman were practicing with the ball on the stick, practicing not jumping offsides prior to the snap.

During full team 11 on 11, Wilkins targeted wide receiver N’Keal Harry on a short slant. Harry then proceeded to turn on the jets and take off for the endzone despite several whistles being blown. He did not participate on the next play.

Manny’s following drives looked strong. The one who struggled was center Cohl Cabral, who had two low snaps during first-team reps that resulted in nothing for the offense but a poor pass and a fumble by Wilkins.

The running back spot started with Isaiah Floyd but rotated in Benjamin and Smith as well. The rest looked as normal.

After full team, the positions split off and did their individual drills until time ran out for media.
