This is the second upset that No. 19 ASU (13-5, 4-3) has experienced this season, but this time, the Devils are winners.
It took 10 extra minutes, but the Devils left Oregon with a road split after a 79-76 victory in double overtime over No. 10 Oregon State (15-3, 5-1) Sunday night.
Leading the scoring? Who else. Senior forward Kianna Ibis has continued to pile on the point-scoring, as she had a season-high 28 points. She added 13 rebounds for a double-double, the second by a Sun Devil this season.
Junior guard Reili Richardson continued to provide the clutch factor for the Devils down the stretch. She finished with 16 points - 10 of which came in overtime - and six assists.
This wasn’t your typical upset, where the team pulls off a miracle comeback or just comes out of the gates dominating the opponent. ASU was very much in this game, but then nearly lost it.
After the first quarter, it was tied at 14. ASU then proceeded to lead by seven at the half.
The third quarter saw ASU digging themselves a hole, having been outscored 19-8 by the Beavers. They were able to recover and claw back to send the game to the first OT after an 11-point fourth quarter from Ibis.
It was a much-needed boost after the loss to Oregon to salvage a difficult road trip with at least one win. This will provide ASU with much-needed momentum before facing UCLA and USC at home next weekend.
Until then, the Devils are riding high off the adrenaline of this upset.
