The #10 Sun Devils (4-7) failed to emerge with a victory in tonight’s dual meet against #24 Lock Haven (4-2). The Sun Devils have struggled against ranked opponents this season, having won only one of six duals with ranked teams this season.
The meet started off with the 174 lb. bout featuring #2 Zahid Valencia, the junior, and Lock Haven’s Jared Siegrist. Valencia was in control by the second period and he finished the match with 14-4 major decision.
Senior Jacen Petersen (wrestling up at 184 lb.) lost in the following round 3-2. The Sun Devils had trouble getting wins in the 197 lb. bout and heavyweight round as well. Senior Austyn Harris (197 lb.) lost to Parker McClellan 2-1 after riding time was factored in and Brady Daniel (285 lb.) the freshman heavyweight fell to #9 Thomas Haines 7-3.
Brandon Courtney (125 lb.) squared off with Luke Werner to round out the first half of the meet. While Courtney was in front most of the way, he was pinned in the third period while leading 10-8. Lock Haven won the 125 lb. bout and jumped in front with a lead of 15-4 heading into the break.
ASU had trouble getting into a groove after the intermission. Josh Kramer kicked off the second half for the Sun Devils at 133 lb., he lost in a 6-4 decision to DJ Fehlman. Cory Crooks (141 lb.) meanwhile could not get anything going against #20 Kyle Shoop. Shoop picked up a tech fall against the sophomore in 4:40, and Lock Haven was off and running to start the second half of the dual.
The Devils eventually broke the ice at 149 lb. with a major decision courtesy of junior Josh Maruca (149 lb.). Maruca, who recently earned Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors after the dual with Oregon State, racked up over two minutes of riding time and easily defeated Jonathan Ross 9-1.
Lock Haven lead 23-8 heading into the final two bouts.
#13 Christian Pagdilao (157 lb.) got Arizona State their second consecutive victory in the following 157 lb. matchup against Lock Haven’s Alex Klucker. Pagdilao walked away with a 10-4 decision after the third period.
Finally, the night ended with a thriller in the 165 lb. bout featuring junior #5 Josh Shields and #4 Chance Marsteller. After a scoreless first period, Shields got himself a point early on in the second with an escape. Marsteller answered with an escape of his own in the third and the match proceeded to go into the sudden victory rounds. The match between Shields and Marsteller went on until the second set of tiebreakers, when Shields clawed his way out to a 2-1 lead. He emerged victorious after it was all over with a 2-1 decision.
The final score from tonight saw Lock Haven defeating Arizona State 23-14.
The team is back in action tomorrow night against Lehigh at 5 PM MST in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
