ASU Soccer: No. 2 Stanford blanks the Sun Devils

Goals coming tough

Arizona State (6-9-3, 0-7-2 Pac-12) ran into the buzzsaw of No. 2 Stanford (17-1-0, 9-0-0) on Thursday night. The Cardinal put on a dominant performance in its 3-0 win over the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils managed to shoot only one shot in Palo Alto. They’re not the only ones who have struggled against the Cardinal defense. Stanford, the now 2019 Pac-12 Champions after the victory, didn’t concede a single goal in eight October games.

On the flip side of that however, Arizona State hasn’t scored multiple goals in a game since the Pac-12 opener against Utah.

Freshman goalkeeper Giulia Cascapera made six saves against the Cardinal, but the talented group continued to find success.

An error from the Sun Devils led to Stanford’s first goal in the eighth minute from Madison Haley. Later in the first half, Jojo Harber got on the end of a corner kick to put the Cardinal up 2-0 into halftime.

Then the nation’s leader in goals, Catarina Macario put away her 21st score of the year in the second half.

The Sun Devils will try again for their first Pac-12 win on Sunday against Cal at 1:00 p.m.
