ASU Football: Spring Practice Report (2/12)

Week 2

NCAA Football: Arizona State at Oregon Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Week two of spring practice has begun and the quarterback competition continues.

Last practice: Saturday, February 9

Next practice: Wednesday, February 13

Injury update

Linebacker Stanley Lambert did light drills at the beginning of practice for the first time since his ACL injury late last season.

Cornerback Chase Lucas returned to practice after his family matter he attended to the first week of spring.

Not present: LB Merlin Robertson (Edwards said he’s fine), WR Kyle Williams (Showed up super late due to academic reasons), S Langston Frederick

Worked off to the side: WR Ryan Newsome, DL D.J. Davidson, RB Demetrious Flowers, OT Zach Robertson, WR John Humphrey, OT Spencer Lovell, LB Tyler Johnson, DL Mark Walton, CB Dominique Harrison, WR Keith Davis.

What went on

With the recent departure of linebacker Reggie Hughes and his announcement to transfer elsewhere, Ely Doyle moved to play linebacker. Walk-on Case Hatch also got first-team reps as Merlin Robertson missed practice for an undisclosed reason, but head coach Herm Edwards said it was nothing to worry about.

Hatch did get an interception after he was tipped by both linebacker Khaylan Kearse-Thomas and tight end Tommy Hudson. It wasn’t the only interception as quarterback Joey Yellen began to scramble and threw it in a poor position right at safety Aashari Crosswell, who picked it off. Edwards called to Yellen saying, “throw it away Joey.”

Yellen and Dillion Sterling-Cole were the pairing today that took the majority of the reps. Sterling-Cole continued to be the most impressive quarterback so far this spring. He had a nice deep ball to running back Paul Lucas, who played from the slot receiver position today, down the right sideline. Yellen had his struggles of the interception and a few miscommunications with wide receivers.

The secondary itself had a very impressive day. Safety Cam Phillips jarred a ball loose after Hudson caught a short underneath route. Phillips proceeded to have a pass breakup against a deep pass from Yellen.

Cornerback Kobe Williams defended a fade nicely against wide receiver Frank Darby, Darby caught the ball out of bounds. He then said, “you keep me in, that’s all day.” Williams did have his struggles against wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk beat Williams on a deep ball, Williams tripped over Aiyuk and he got called for pass interference.
