What went on:
Jayden Daniels got a ton of work on Wednesday over the course of practice. Here are some notes of plays that we saw.
A seem route up the middle to Tyerell Baldonado-Kaelopu that was just passed his out stretched arms. Daniels scrambled and fumbled ball when he ran into lineman. He threw a nice pass on an out route to Geordon Porter, he created separation from Darien Cornay. Daniels threw a ball into the end zone, but no one near. Likens yelled ‘c’mon Frank’ making it look like Frank Darby ran the wrong route. Passes to running backs Eno Benjamin and AJ Carter produced nice gains as each was open and the closest defender was linebacker Ely Doyle, but even he wasn’t close. Doyle created pressure off the right side causing Daniels to throw a deep ball to Porter, but it wasn’t close.
The defensive side, defensive linemen George Lea got a pressure up the middle. On a play-action pass, Daniels couldn’t find anyone and linebacker Darien Butler got into the backfield for what could’ve been a sack had they been tackling. Defensive lineman Jermayne Lole also got a pressure, but Daniels reacted well and find Benjamin on a swing pass.
In Ethan Long’s reps, he worked in the red zone and the entire field. In the red zone, he had a play-action boot leg, he couldn’t find anyone and took it himself for a touchdown. Had they been tackling, Long still most likely would’ve got in. Benjamin took an outside zone handoff from Long, he got to the corner and dove for a touchdown. He and center Cohl Cabral chest bumped after the ball. In a different part of practice, Benjamin got a run, but linebacker Case Hatch blew up Cabral and created reactions from teammates. Cabral got up and hugged Hatch in a pretty funny moment.
In 11-on-11s, Baldonado-Kaelopu found a soft spot in the zone defense, but Long threw it too far in front of him as it fell incomplete. Long sold a play-action option handoff, he tossed it to Curtis Hodges for a nice gain. Hodges was setup with a good block from wide receiver Keith Davis.
Joey Yellen got limited action with the first team. He had a very nice throw in the middle of the field on a streak route by wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Aiyuk initially beat safety Cam Phillips, fellow safety Aashari Crosswell tried to help in coverage, but the ball from Yellen and space created by Aiyuk were too much. Yellen threw a deep ball to Porter on the far sideline, he was defended by cornerback Timarcus Davis, Yellen put in a spot from Porter could adjust to it, but only managed to get one hand on it.
Non-quarterback notes, wide receiver John Humphrey had his first non-injury day since the first spring practice. He worked through walkthroughs with the second team offense. With Kobe Williams not at practice and Chase Lucas sidelined, Davis, Cornay and Terin Adams all rotated in with the first team defense.
