Day three of Spring Practice took place on Friday night in the bubble. With the quarterback battle still in full swing, Dillon Sterling-Cole and Joey Yellen got their cracks under center.

Last practice: Tuesday, February 6

Next practice: Saturday, February 9

Injury update

Linebacker Tyler Johnson, defensive lineman D.J. Davidson, linebacker Stanley Lambert, wide receiver John Humphrey, wide receiver Ryan Newsome, and defensive linemen Mark Walton were all out due to injuries. For the third consecutive practice, cornerback Chase Lucas was not in attendance due to a family matter.

What went on

Manny Wilkins was in attendance to take in the action on Friday night. Many people showed up to view the quarterback battle, and along with Wilkins and many fans, Ricky Pearsall and Elijah Juarez were in attendance from the 2019 recruiting class.

In 7-on7s, Yellen took reps early on. He had his struggles on a couple of overthrown deep balls, and he had an interception that was picked off by Aashari Crosswell. However, Yellen would settle down as practice wore on.

Sterling-Cole once again looked sharp, completing a deep ball down the sideline to redshirt freshman wide receiver Geordon Porter, who strolled into the end zone. He also made a completion over the middle to redshirt junior Frank Darby later on.

Sterling-Cole made a variety of short throws throughout 7-on7s and 11-on-11s as well. Toward the end of practice, Yellen started to settle in after somewhat of a rough start to practice. In 1-on-1s between wide receivers and corners, Yellen found senior wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk on a streak over the top of senior defensive back Darian Cornay.

As for the defense, senior cornerback Kobe Williams looked good on Friday. Matched up with a variety of receivers, he had a few pass break-ups in 1-on1’s and 7-on7’s.

Furthermore, graduate student Tyler Whiley participated in practice for the first time this spring.

Note: Believe it or not, we do keep track of comments on the bottom of our practice reports to try and enhance our coverage for fans. We saw comments from the other day asking about videos, and we would have embedded video from tonight, but media was not allowed to record during practice. Thank you for understanding.
