After placing fourth at Pac-12s with a time of 6:18.07 in the 800 freestyle relay, ASU took the blocks on the first day in Austin, Texas seeded 16th. Sophomore Grant House has the fastest 200 freestyle time on the team, at 1:32.38, and led off the relay in 1:32.74. Sophomores Carter Swift and Evan Carlson followed, with freshman Liam Bresette anchoring.
The quartet jumped ahead of their seed, finishing 2nd in the heat, for a 9th-overall finish in the event. The 6:14.76 time was a three-second drop from the seed time, and came attached to a new school record as well as All-American honors for all four
Day two came with less bountiful fruit: through two individual swims, a relay and a diver, no Sun Devil qualified for Thursday evening finals.
Junior Youssef Selim competed in the one-meter dive, finishing 19th with 302.90 points. He still has the two-meter and platform diving competitions to finish the weekend on a higher note.
Grant House was seeded 13th in the 200 individual medley, one of three individual events in which he qualified. House added 1.49 seconds to his seed time, sending him down to 33rd place, not qualifying for finals.
Carter Swift, the sole ASU competitor in the 50 freestyle, also added time: .22 seconds to be precise. Swift placed 42nd with a 19.98 sprint, splitting 9.50 on the way out.
The 400 medley relay, the final event of Thursday morning, seeded the Sun Devil relay of junior Zach Poti, Grant House, freshman Khalil Fonder, and Evan Carlson 17th. The group combined to add 1.13 seconds to the seed time, placing them 22nd and out of reach of finals.
Through two days, ASU has scored 18 points, all from the 800 freestyle relay. The team sits at 21st place in the overall team scores with two more days to swim. ASU swimmers will compete in the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and three-meter diving Friday.
