On Wednesday, it was announced that sophomore first baseman Spencer Torkelson and junior left fielder Hunter Bishop were included in USA Baseball’s 25-man list of the Golden Spikes Award Semifinalists.
Torkelson is one of three players that were semifinalists last year including Texas Tech’s junior third baseman Josh Jung and the reigning winner in Cal’s junior first baseman Andrew Vaughn.
Bishop’s 22 home runs rank him second in the nation behind a three-way tie of players who have 23. His 61 RBI rank him 11th in the nation as well and second in the Pac-12. Torkelson is right behind him with 19 homers and 57 RBI, that put him at second and third in the conference as well. With averages over .350 (Bishop .366 and Torkelson .351) they both are in the top 11 in that category for the Pac-12.
Arizona State is one of four schools with two representatives on the list along with Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
Torkelson, Bishop and Vaughn are joined by Oregon State’s junior catcher Adley Rutschman and UCLA’s junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Garcia in representing the Pac-12.
