In a win or go home elimination game, the Sun Devils stayed alive. ASU (1-1 in postseason) defeated Stony Brook (0-2 in postseason) 13-5 on Saturday afternoon. They will play the loser of Southern Mississippi and LSU in the winners bracket.
ASU trailed the Seawolves 2-0 after two early runs in the first inning, but the Devils would rally quickly. In the third, sophomore first baseman Spencer Torkelson brought home sophomore outfielder Trevor Hauver on an RBI double. Sophomore shortstop Alika Williams then recorded another RBI to knot the game at two.
Stony Brook would take back a 3-2 lead, but it would be short lived. Hauver answered right back with an RBI, then sophomore shortstop Drew Swift scored on a wild pitch, one of a few costly miscues for the Seawolves on the afternoon.
From there, the Devils grabbed the reigns and never looked back. Five different players had two hits or more. Sophomore third baseman Gage Workman had three hits and two RBI’s, junior catcher Sam Ferri tallied three hits of his own, and the bats went on to roll after they were somewhat locked up yesterday against Southern Miss.
On the bump, sophomore pitcher RJ Dabovich was effective, nearly going a full seven innings. Dabovich went 6.2 innings while striking out six.
Sophomore pitcher Brady Corrigan and junior Chaz Montoya then went on to close things out. The Devils will now await for the winner of Southern Miss and LSU. They play on Sunday at 12 p.m. MST.
