We continue our best teams from ASU ever this summer with our next matchup. No. 9 1971-72 Football beat No. 8 1988 Baseball in our last matchup. Now it’s No. 5 1995 Women’s Golf vs. No. 12 2017-18 MBB.
Here’s the current bracket:
No. 5 1995 Women’s Golf
Record: 10-0, Won Third Consecutive NCAA Championship
Head coach: Linda Vollstedt
Notable players: Wendy Ward, Kristel Mourgue d’Algue, Heather Bowie and Kelle Booth
The Rundown: The 1995 Women’s Golf program won all of the team tournaments they competed in. The team won each tournament by an average of 25 shots and in addition to winning every team tournament they also won nine out of 10 individual tournaments as well. Four players, Ward, Mourgue d’Algue, Bowie and Booth, were named First-Team All-Americans, which was the first time four teammates were selected to the First-Team. At the NCAA Championship the Devils three-peated as champions winning the tournament by 26 strokes.
No. 12 2017-18 MBB
Record: 20-12, Reached First Four
Head coach: Bobby Hurley
Notable players: Tra Holder, Shannon Evans and Kodi Justice
The rundown: Dubbed “Guard U” the ‘17-’18 Devils shot out of the gates quick and went undefeated in non-conference play and got ranked as highly as No. 3 in the country. That 11-game stretch included beating Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse 95-85. However, an (8-10) conference record placed them on the bubble, but they made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. They would lose to Syracuse in their First Four game.
