We continue our best teams from ASU ever this summer with our next matchup. No. 4 1975-76 Football beat No. 5 1995 Women’s Golf in our last matchup. Now it’s No. 1 1981 Baseball vs. No. 9 2013 Softball.

No. 1 1981 Baseball
Record: 55-13 (26-4 Pac-12) Won College World Series
Head coach: Jim Brock
Notable players: Alvin Davis, Stan Holmes, Mike Sodders
The rundown: The last ASU team to win the College World Series. After winning the conference in dominant fashion, Jim Brock’s team set sail for Omaha. There they lifted the trophy at Rosenblatt Stadium after wins over Texas, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and South Carolina. The team had eight MLB draftees on the roster including first rounder and 1981 Baseball America Player of the Year Mike Sodders.
No. 9 2013 Softball
Record: 50-12, Reached Women’s College World Series
Head coach: Clint Myers
Notable players: Dallas Escobedo, Cheyenne Coyle
The rundown: The 2013 was the last of the Myers era and the excellent run the program had in the late 2000s. ASU finished second in the conference with the only two losses being to Utah and Arizona. The excellent regular season run into another postseason with an undefeated Tempe regional against San Jose State and Georgia. They moved onto the WCWS after the a win over Kentucky in the Super Regional. The Sun Devils went 0 for 2 in Oklahoma City against Texas and Michigan. It was the last season before a handful of coaching changes for the program.
