The lone senior on the Sun Devil roster was taken on the last day of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Sam Romero was taken in the 40th round by the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon.

A Phoenix native, Romero posted a 4.33 ERA in 43.2 innings of work in his senior campaign. He primarily appeared as both a starter and a reliever in his two years with the program after transferring from Phoenix College.

As a junior in 2018, Romero had the second most innings pitched on the team behind only former Sun Devil Eli Lingos. In addition to the statistic, Romero also had one of his most notable performances last year at No. 2 Stanford, when he struck out eight batters against a top-five opponent.

Romero was honored against the Cardinal this season as the only senior on the ASU roster. He joins Hunter Bishop, Alec Marsh, Carter Aldrete, and Lyle Lin as one of five Devils’ rounding out the 2019 draft class.
