We continue our best teams from ASU ever this summer with our next matchup. No. 6 1970-71 Football beat No. 11 2009 Baseball in our last matchup. Now it’s No. 8 1988 Baseball vs. No. 9 1971-72 Football.

No. 8 1988 Baseball

Record: 60-13 (21-9 Pac-10)

Head Coach: Jim Brock (16th year)

Notable Players: Kevin Higgins, Pat Listach, Blas Minor, Tim Spehr

The Rundown: A team that won 17 of its first 18, 32 of its final 34 regular season games and made it to the College World Series championship, the 1988 ASU Baseball is an all-time squad. With a 60 win season, the Devils entered the College World Series as the #1 overall seed. Pac-10 champions that year, it was conference opponent Stanford that took them down 9-4 in the championship game. The 1988 team had an All-American (Kevin Higgins) and six of eleven members on the College World Series All-American Team.

Record: 11-1 (7-0 WAC)

Head Coach: Frank Kush (14th year)

Notable Players: Woody Green, Danny White, Windlan Hall, Brent McClanahan

The Rundown: An all-time squad in program history. The offense, led by sophomore running back Woody Green and sophomore quarterback Danny White, scored 462 points while the defense allowed just 206 points. The devils beat Arizona 31-0 in Tempe and beat Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl. Conference champions, the Devils were ranked as high as #6 in the coaches poll and #8 in the AP poll.
