Another diamond duel

We continue our best teams from ASU ever this summer with our next matchup. No. 3 1989-90 Men’s Golf beat No. 11 2007 Softball in our last matchup. Now it’s No. 2 1967 Baseball vs. No. 7 1978 Baseball.

No. 2 1967 Baseball

Record: 53-12, (7-5 WAC), Won College World Series

Head coach: Bobby Winkles

Notable players: Gary Gentry, Scott Reid, Ron Davini

The rundown: On its way to the second title in program history, ASU led by The Sporting News Player of the Year Gary Gentry. The team lost its first two WAC series of the season to Arizona and New Mexico, but from there only lost four games the rest of the season. The Sun Devils lost to Houston at the CWS, then survived 14 innings with Stanford and got revenge to grab that second championship.

No. 7 1978 Baseball

Record: 56–12 (15–3 WAC) Runner-up at the College World Series

Head coach: Jim Brock

Notable players: Bob Horner, Hubie Brooks

The rundown: Jim Brock’s team finished an outstanding season and headed into the NCAA Tournament as the second overall seed. Bob Horner led the way in his final season as a Sun Devil with 25 home runs and 100 RBIs, with Hubie Brooks right behind him with 82 RBIs. The team beat St. John’s, Oral Roberts and Miami (FL) before falling to USC twice in Omaha.
