After a day off, ASU returned to practice for one last time before they head to Payson for Camp Tontozona.
Next Practice: Tuesday, August 6
Last Practice: Friday, August 2
Injury Update
The group of non-contact green jerseys stayed the same, linebacker Stanley Lambert, defensive linemen Shannon Forman and Stephon Wright. Ball catchers Curtis Hodges and Geordon Porter returned to practice. Wide receiver Frank Darby was sore and limited in practice. Linebacker Tyler Johnson did work in the bubble.
What Went On
Defensive backs worked on tackling without helmets, with the hopes they’d keep their heads up while tackling.
The offense continued to work on throws to running backs. Eno Benjamin, A.J. Carter and Isaiah Floyd all lined up in the backfield or slot for various routes.
The best quarterback of the night appeared to be Joey Yellen. The highlight came on a deep ball on a post to Ricky Pearsall out of the slot. Yellen hit him in stride perfectly. He also had a solid connection with Jordan Kerley all night. The freshman receiver seemed to constantly get open over the middle. He also beat Preston Liger deep, he received a dart from Dillon Sterling-Cole, but the ball fell threw Kerley’s hands.
Yellen also tossed the only interception of the night. However, it was a bit of a crazy play. He threw a pass over the middle, Tyler Whiley dove and the ball deflected off of him and into the hands of Kejuan Markham. Whiley, who usually plays with the first team, ran with the second team defense. Evan Fields replaced him as the first team safety.
Sterling-Cole and Jayden Daniels each had their moments, but did not look fantastic. Sterling-Cole threw a ball far, just too far. The ball intended for Keith Davis went far over his head, the two closest Sun Devils to the ball were Aashari Crosswell and Kobe Williams, Crosswell nearly picked it off.
Chase Lucas soared to the ball on a slant route to Brandon Aiyuk, Lucas laid the wood to knock the ball out and get some ooooos from his teammates.
