The floodgates, literally and fugitively, opened in the second half in Orlando for UCF (2-1-2). The Golden Knights had plenty of opportunities in the first half without converting any but one. That changed once the rain started to fall.
In the 55th minute, UCF midfielder Zandy Soree boxed out Arizona State defender Lieske Carleer on the right side of the box. Soree, fed by her teammate Ally Gudorf, netted a shot of a volley and off the hands of Sun Devil goalkeeper Sydney Day. Her score put UCF up for good.
Gudorf built another Golden Knight score a few minutes later. A perfect build up finished by forward Kristen Scott helped UCF win 4-1 and sent Arizona State (5-2-0) to a second straight defeat. UCF midfielder Ellie Moreno added a goal in the 79th minute.
Quickly out of the halftime break, UCF pressured the Sun Devil back line until they broke it down for the pair of goals. The Golden Knights tried long balls down the field and opened up chances in the first half, but never got shots off. That changed in the second half, 12 of UCF’s 14 shots came in the final 45 minutes and the pressure limited Arizona State’s attack.
The first goal was one Day would want back. UCF midfielder Mollie Rouse sent in a free kick that went into the hands of Day, and then out. Forward Jessica Forward took the layup and up UCF up 1-0.
Freshman Sun Devil forward Dai Williams tied the contest up six minutes later with her third score of the season. Midfielder Eva Van Deursen’s pass got an added boost after a UCF defender flicked it closer to Williams down the right side.
The Sun Devils will try to get back in the win column on Sunday at 10 a.m. at LSU.
