After Arizona State dropped its first match of the season to Oklahoma a week ago, head coach Graham Winkworth emphasized the importance of not going from 5-0 to 5-3 with his team’s upcoming road trip.
The Sun Devils (6-2-0) answered their coach’s request on Sunday with a 1-0 victory at LSU (2-4-1).
The maroon and gold pressured the Tigers the entire game. The Sun Devils outshot their opponents 16-3 in the win, and were the only ones to put a shot on goal. Giulia Cascapera returned to the keeper position for the Sun Devils, but her teammates made her job easy in the win.
Despite all the pressure, Arizona State put zero shots on goal and kicked five corners. Nicole Douglas took charge in the second half. In the 52nd minute, the English forward weaved her way through the Tigers defense to send her team leading seventh goal of the season into the back of the net.
Midfielders Eva Van Deursen and Dai Williams also put a shot on goal.
Arizona State returns to Tempe for its final non-conference match on Friday at 6:30 p.m against Cal State Northridge. The Matadors come in with a 5-1-2 record with their lone loss against No. 12 Texas A&M.
