ASU Football: Sun Devils lose three 2021 commitments

Scholarships pulled

On Tuesday, offensive tackle Marcus Mbow and tight end Garrett Gillette announced on Twitter that “Arizona State dropped their scholarships.”

The pair of 2021 recruits from Wisconsin said they were reopening their recruitments. This comes shortly after Arizona State lost the commitment of Charles Lamar Armstrong.

Later on Tuesday, linebacker Isaiah Pipkins also tweeted that he was parting ways from Arizona State and his commitment. 247Sports has Pipkins as its 1382nd ranked recruit nationally, 93rd outside linebacker and 59th in the state of North Carolina.

247Sports rated Mbow as its 864th-ranked recruit in the 2021 class, 74th offensive tackle and seventh in Wisconsin. Gillette came in as the site’s 1222nd nationally-ranked recruit, 64th at the tight end position, and eighth in Wisconsin.

The assumption based around this is that Arizona State views other prospects higher on their list at the moment, and there is only a certain amount of scholarships to go around.

During the 2019-20 recruiting cycle, Arizona State did have a lot of de-commitments, especially from those that made pledges during the summer similar to Mbow and Gillette.

However, a reminder that leaving those spots open toward the later part of the recruiting cycle helped the Sun Devils land Johnny Wilson, LV Bunkley-Shelton, Elijhah Badger and Daniyel Ngata.
