The Arizona State Sun Devils (2-1) had their first loss of the season, falling 28-12 against the No. 3 Northwestern Wildcats (3-1).

It was coach Tim McCormack’s first return back to Northwestern after he spent six years as their assistant coach. He was given a ring in their pre-game ceremony celebrating the 2019 Big Ten Champions.

The Wildcats didn’t waste any time after that, going on an 8-0 run to start the game off. However, the Sun Devils were finally able to answer putting three goals in the back of the net in less than two minutes.

Northwestern continued to pour in goals against the Sun Devil defense, as they went into halftime on a 9-0 run extending their lead to 23-7.

The Sun Devils continued to fight in the second half despite the deficit. Their defense saw a lot of improvements in the final 30 minutes of play.

Each team scored five points in the second half, but the Sun Devils outshot the Wildcats 11-8 and beat them 8-5 in ground balls.

”When we made an adjustment defensively, we buckled down,” McCormack said. “The effort was there; we just have to come out a little stronger off the bat.”

Senior attacker Kerri Clayton recorded her third consecutive hat trick this season. Junior attacker Emily Glagolev was the team’s leading scorer, racking up six points.

The Sun Devils will travel to San Diego State on Thursday at 2 p.m. MST.
