ASU Football: Spring Practice Report (2/27)

Back outside

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Arizona State vs Florida State Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona State Sun Devils had their first practice outside of the spring on Thursday.

Last Practice: Tuesday, February 25

Next Practice: Saturday, February 29

Injury Report

Safety Cam Phillips was not seen at practice. Wide receiver Frank Darby and linebacker Stanley Lambert were both observed getting treatment from injuries during practice. Darby limped to the trainer’s tent and had a walking boot on afterwards. Lambert was getting his wrist taped and soon left with a trainer after. Jack Jones was again in a green, non-contact jersey.

What Went On

After the first round of the 11-on-11 session, coach Herm Edwards walked over to the offense and said “that wasn’t good enough offense.” He moved to the defense and said the same thing and that’s the reason they’re doing the drill over.

Defensive coach Robert Rodriguez displayed his knowledge in drills with his defensive line group. Rodriguez talked a lot about the little things in the getting around and slapping the bag drill. He gave each player advice down to the core whether it was about the get-off, the hand placement of their off-hand or the alignment in their hips.

DeaMonte Trayanum had a really nice run up the gap between the left guard and center. Cody Shear was praised for the block he made on the play. Both freshmen, Trayanum and Daniyel Ngata, showed off their talent once again.

Antonio Pierce and Marvin Lewis’ defense was more in a base nickel package rather than a 4-3, thus the reason for two linebackers and five defensive backs. Willie Harts filled in one of the safety spots vacated by the absent Cam Phillips.

Jayden Daniels overthrew a short out route and Chase Lucas nearly picked it off. Had he it would’ve been a pick six.
