ASU Football: Spring Practice Report (2/29)

Putting the pads back on

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Arizona State vs Florida State Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona State Sun Devils had on the full set of pads on Saturday for the first time this spring.

Last Practice: Thursday, February 27

Next Practice: Monday, March 2

Injury Report

Wide receiver Frank Darby sat out Saturday after injuring his calf on Thursday. Linebacker Merlin Robertson was absent due to personal reasons and safety Cam Phillips was gone as well. Safety Willie Harts and linebacker Darien Butler were limited. Cornerback Jack Jones wore his green, non-contact jersey. Running back Demetrious Flowers returned to practice.

What Went On

Co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce got on Fritzney Niclasse for not pushing through the tackling dummy. Niclasses responded with a good rep. Freshman linebacker Caleb McCullough struggled getting leverage in the drill.

In a carry during 11-on-11s, running back AJ Carter didn’t run much authority that brought out a “stop being soft 25,” call from the coaching staff.

Jayden Daniels had a few off throws during the first 11-on-11 portion. He tried going deep but was completely overthrown. Brandon Pierce run over the middle on a route and Daniels threw behind him.

The linemen left and 7-on-7s came on. The standout was tight end Nolan Matthews. He had an over the shoulder grab and caught a deep post route from Trenton Bourguet.

DeaMonte Trayanum continued to look very good in his handoffs running with a lot of power. It appears he’s starting to get more and more of the starting reps.

Jack Jones didn’t participate in the 11-on-11s, Keon Markham took the snaps across from Chase Lucas. Andre Johnson got more of the time from Darby’s absence. Freshmen Jordan Banks and Caleb McCullough got more playing time from missing players as well. Banks got a nice hit on Curtis Hodges over the middle.

The Sun Devils started in the 4-3 base defense but did switch off a linebacker for a nickel corner at times in the form of Jordan Clark and T Lee.
