Next up in out 2019-20 Sun Devil Classics, we look back at the biggest upset of the women's basketball season, as unranked Arizona State knocked off the No. 2 Oregon Ducks in Desert Financial Arena.
Highlights:
The Rundown:
This year’s Sun Devil women’s basketball program was senior heavy, but also very young. At times during the course of the regular season, it showed as the team would finish strong against at times, only to struggle down the stretch against tough opponents.
That wasn't the case against No. 2 Oregon, though. The team had been trying for three years to knock off Sabrina Ionescu and company, and it finally happened.
After trailing for most of the game and looking at another tough loss against a ranked opponent, a spark lit the team. The rest was history.
Senior guard Robbi Ryan hit a three-pointer to get the Devils back into the game and ready for an upset alert. Ryan and fellow senior guard Reili Richardson then connected on four three-pointers in the fourth quarter to take the lead over Oregon.
Once they took control, the team wouldn't let the lead slip away against one of the best teams in the country. Ionescu scored eight of the Oregon’s 10 points in the final four minutes, but it wasn't enough to escape the upset.
On the flip side, the senior group led by Jamie Ruden, Kiara Russell, Ja’Tavia Tapley, Ryan and Richardson scored all 30 points in the fourth to close out the 72-66 final.
This game not only gave the students a chance to storm the court, but another reason as to why the Sun Devils can compete and close out tough games.
