ASU Football: Spring Practice Report (3/3)

Practicing in full pads again

NCAA Football: Sun Bowl-Arizona State vs Florida State Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sports

With the second week of Spring Practice starting, both sides look to be more familiar with the playbook. Today was the second day of full pads for the Sun Devils.

Last Practice: Saturday, February 29

Next Practice: Wednesday, March 4

Injury Report

Wide receiver Frank Darby sat out practice again but was wearing a sleeve on his left leg. Linebacker Merlin Robertson returned to practice. Herm Edwards said safety Cam Phillips is back home in Houston for personal reasons. Safety Willie Harts was in the bubble. Cornerback Jack Jones wore his green, non-contact jersey. Linebacker Darien Butler was limited. Offensive lineman Dohnovan West had class. Tight end Nolan Matthews participated in practice early but later went to get treatment for a possible sickness.

What Went On

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Long traded in his gray QB jersey for a maroon one. Edwards said he sees Long as an H-Back and wants to get Long on the field.

In multiple periods of practice, the team went through the 11-on-11 drill. With both sides running new schemes, Edwards said he knows the team has to learn new schemes and wants them to prepare at game speed. In the individual portion of practice, co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce had the linebackers practicing on shedding blocks, scooping and scoring, tackling and dropping into coverage. Freshman linebacker Caleb McCullough struggled through shedding the block. Pierce helped the freshman linebacker and Robertson came over to give him words of encouragement.

Jack Jones participated in all drills and returned as the first team corner. Jordan Clark and T Lee came in as nickel corners in all 11-on-11 sessions.

In the field goal portion of practice all three kickers (Zendejas, Luckhurst and Plaster) took turns attempting field goals. All three were successful in their first two tries but failed to make any from 50-yards out.

In the final 11-on-11 portion of practice, Jayden Daniels made a nice throw into the corner of the end zone for redshirt sophomore Keith Davis to come down with it in traffic.
