It feels like it’s been months since Sun Devil softball took the field. We wanted to relive one of their most exciting games of the 2020 season. We take a look at the Sun Devils’ second win over No. 10 Kentucky at the Littlewood Classic.
The Rundown:
Kentucky and Arizona State, two of the most explosive offenses in the country were actually in a pitcher’s duel. The Wildcats led 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. Arizona State was down to its final out but benefitted from two Kentucky errors including on a ball hit by ASU third baseman Kiara Kennedy to tie the game.
With the international rule of starting every extra inning with a runner on second base, the two power teams decided to play small ball. Kentucky started the eighth inning with a bunt single and the pressure was on for the Sun Devils. Arizona State ended up with multiple miscues and Kentucky scored three.
Back against the walls again, Arizona State was an out away from losing with two runners on before freshman shortstop Alynah Torres launched a three-run home run to tie things up again.
The two teams traded runs in the 10th.
Cielo Meza tossed a clean 11th inning and handed the Sun Devils a chance to win. A sacfrice bunt placed the winning-run at third base and designated player Alli Tatnall went up trying to just drive it in the air for a sac-fly. Well, she hit it too hard for that sending a two-run game-winner out of the park.
