Gymnastics tops No. 10 BYU in home opener
The 11th-ranked Sun Devils narrowly beat a talented BYU (2-2) team on Saturday night. In Arizona State’s (1-1) home opener, the Sun Devils won 196.275-196.250.
BYU finished on top in the vault, bars and floor. Anaya Smith and Hannah Scharf actually were the top performers in the vault overall. Cario Leonard-Baker earned Arizona State’s top score in the bars. Scharf’s 9.900 was the meet’s best for the floor exercise.
Meanwhile, the balance beam was the only event that the Sun Devils had a higher score. However, the .45 difference between the two teams in beam proved to be the difference.
Scharf, Sarah Clark, Megan Thompson and Gracie Reeves all scored 9.850 or higher in beam for the four highest scores in the event.
Scharf scored an all-around score of 39.500 while winning floor and beam with a second-place finish in vault.
