ASU Soccer: Arizona beats Sun Devils in season finale

A season to forget

Zac BonDurant

Arizona State soccer (10-8-2, 2-7-2 Pac-12) had a conference season to forget. However, the Sun Devils had a chance to grab their first win over Arizona (5-13-0, 2-9-0) since 2015. Despite a down year for the Wildcats, Jill Aguilera had other plans for her last match against Arizona State.

The Wildcat senior, who had already gave her team the lead earlier in the game, had a chance to end it in overtime. From the spot, Aguilera netted the penalty kick to secure the 2-1 win over the Sun Devils. Aguilera’s 32nd and 33rd career goals also made her the Arizona all-time program leader in goals.

The Sun Devils trailed for most of the game. Aguilera sailed a free kick over Arizona State goalkeeper Julia Ortega for a 13th-minute goal. Arizona State finally answered back in the 82nd minute.

Nicole Douglas found her nation-leading 19th goal of the season on a header off a cross from Lauren Kirberg. As the NCAA Tournament field is announced on Monday, Douglas should still be holding that league.

For Arizona State coach Graham Winkworth and the Sun Devils, it was a sour note for a disappointing season. However, Winkworth will get Douglas, Eva van Deursen and Alexia Delgado for an extra year next season. The team will likely also have a healthy Giulia Cascapera, who missed all of this season and left a pretty big void at the goalkeeper spot.
