Olivia Nguyen didn’t have a lot of playing time in her first two seasons as a Sun Devil, but she’s certainly making the most of it in her junior season. Nguyen put away a golden goal in the 97th minute to give Arizona State (3-0) a 3-2 win over Grand Canyon (0-3).

On paper, Arizona State appeared to control most of the match on Thursday against Grand Canyon.

However, it was the Lopes that held the lead for most of it. Much of the night, ASU saw chances similar to Vildan Kardesler’s shot that banked off the right goal post and later scored by Nguyen.

Arizona State put 17 shots on goal and had a total of 29 shots. Grand Canyon keeper Hayden Wallace had 13 saves against the Sun Devils.

Despite only having four shots on goal, the Lopes capitalized with goals in the 28th and 31st minutes from Camryn Larson and Jaycee Iranshad.

Kardesler had a nice score in the 76th minute to tie the game. Fed by a ball from Nicole Douglas down the right side of the field, Kardesler dribbled down the line and snuck a ball past Wallace. Olive Jones started the scoring back in the fourth minute.

The two teams will play again on Sunday at Sun Devil Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
