Lacrosse

Tim McCormack’s team started its season on the right note on Sunday. Arizona State lacrosse (1-0) opened the 2021 season with a 23-10 win over San Diego State (1-2).

For most of the first half, the two teams battled back-and-forth. The Sun Devils stretch into halftime certainly set the tone for the second period. After scoring four of the last five goals in the first period, Arizona State outscored the Aztecs 11-2 in the final session.

The dominant attack also made for less work on the defensive side as San Diego State only had six shots on goal after 20 in the first period.

Arizona State had 10 different scores on Sunday. Graduate student Carley Adams’ career-high eight goals led the team.

Katie Brodsky added four herself and Emily Glagolev earned a hat trick and had a team-high three assists as well. In the net, Berkeley Bonneau saved 15 shots.

Lacrosse continues its season on Feb. 27 against Fresno State in Tempe.

Volleyball

On the court, Arizona State volleyball’s (1-9) losing streak was extended to nine. Once again the Sun Devils showed potential and competitiveness but were swept by No. 15 UCLA (7-3) 3-0 (25-27, 15-25, 21-25) on Sunday.

The Sun Devils really pushed the Bruins in the first set. Arizona State quickly rushed out to a five-point led before UCLA stormed back. Despite leading for most of the set, ASU never had a chance at a set point.

UCLA dominated the second set, leading throughout to close it out on a 13-5 run. The final set was back-and-forth for most of it until the Bruins finally pulled away.

Marta Levinska led the team with 13 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Claudia Stahlke added four kills and a team-high six blocks.

ASU heads to Los Angeles next week on Feb. 26 and 28 to face USC.
