Tuesday bought a handful of news in Arizona State athletics. Here is a little bit of review:

Arizona State football receives the 28th-most votes in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The Sun Devils barely miss the Top 25 for the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll as they are three spots away coming in technically 28th. Only three Pac-12 teams; No. 12 Oregon, No. 14 USC and Utah (got the most votes without being ranked) were ahead of Arizona State in the poll, and UCLA, Stanford and Cal each got 10 or less votes.

The Detroit Lions sign former Sun Devil kicker Zane Gonzalez

Zane Gonzalez’s Arizona Cardinal tenure didn’t end on a high note last season. However, the kicker has a chance to win another starting spot this season. The Lions, a team trying to replace longtime kicker Matt Prater, waived Matthew Wright to sign Gonzalez. He will compete against veteran Randy Bullock for the starting job.
