ASU Soccer: Sun Devils improve to 4-0 following 5-1 win over UAB

The Sun Devils didn’t wait till the final minutes secure the victory on Sunday. Arizona State (4-0-0) rushed out to a lead and eventually beat UAB (1-3-0) 5-1 in Birmingham.

Arizona State’s attack saw contributions from multiple players in the win. Lieske Carleer scored her first goal of the season on a header in the 13th minute. Olivia Nguyen proceed to add on to the lead later on in the first half with the help of Cori Sullivan and Tahlia Herman-Watt.

Callie Darst put the pressure on in the 51st minute leading to an own goal from UAB. Lucy Johnson and Olivia Kearse-Thomas put the other two goals into the back of the net. Eva van Deursen earned two assists on the goals from Carleer and Johnson.

Birta Gudlaugs has cemented herself as the top goalie behind Giulia Cascapera, who hasn’t played yet this season due to injury. She made three wins against the Blazers.

Arizona State returns to Tempe next week to host CSUN (Thursday, September 2 at 10:00 a.m. local time and LSU (Sunday, September at 2:00 p.m. local time).
