Soccer can be a funny sport sometimes. Some days the ball doesn’t roll your way, some days the better team doesn’t have its best performance. No. 20 Arizona State (8-1-0) on paper looks far better than Colorado College (0-6-0). However, Friday showed that the game isn’t played on paper.
The Sun Devils salvaged their final non-conference game of the season thanks to a penalty kick from Nicole Douglas in overtime for a 1-0 win. At the end of the day, the win is all that matters.
Freshman goalkeeper Birta Gudlaugs earned another clean sheet. Although, it didn’t come easy. Colorado College put four shots on goal — Arizona State only had five — meaning Gudlaugs had four saves.
Nevertheless, Arizona State heads into Pac-12 with only one blemish on its record — a loss to top 10 ranked LSU in a game that was much closer than the box score indicated — and that is impressive in itself. The Sun Devils will head to Seattle to face Washington on Sept. 24.
