ASU Football: Herm Edwards names Emory Jones starting quarterback, announces captains

Highly anticipated while also expected

Emory Jones will be the starting quarterback for ASU football week one against NAU, according to head coach Herm Edwards. Edwards also announced the captains for the 2022 season: LaDarius Henderson, Case Hatch, Kyle Soelle, Merlin Robertson and Jones.

Edwards also mentioned earlier this week that Michael Matus will be an honorary captain following his season-ending knee injury.

Jones entered the transfer portal in March after throwing for 2,734 yards and 19 touchdowns on a 64.7 completion percentage at Florida in 2021. Shortly after, ASU coaches seemingly put on a recruiting offensive, following Jones on social media en masse.

In May, Jones announced he was transferring to ASU amid an ongoing quarterback competition in Tempe between Trenton Bourguet and Alabama transfer Paul Tyson.

Tyson and Jones split the majority of first-team reps during the first practices of fall camp, but Jones received more snaps as camp progressed.
