The Sun Devils struggled to get out of the early innings without serious damage again, and it cost them a chance at a series win.

The rubber match of Arizona State’s three-game series against UCLA was decided before the Sun Devils took the plate.

Only a few hours separated from a late-inning victory over the Bruins - rallying from down 4-2 in the eighth to snatch a 5-4 win - it didn’t even take until the end of pregame warmups for skipper Tracy Smith to know his team wasn’t ready for Sunday’s finale.

“Everybody’s trying, but at some point trying’s not good enough,” Smith said. “What we have to guard against - and it was even evident in pregame - we had a big win last night, guys feeling pretty good about themselves. But I think that’s the part where we show a little bit of our immaturity or whatever you want to say because I went out and watched in field and I could tell right then - actually, we pulled them in the locker room and said ‘This isn’t right, we’re not ready to play,’ I could tell just by the way we’re carrying ourselves.”

Arizona State’s lack of presence on Sunday resulted in a five-run bloodshed in the first frame, and the Sun Devils spent another afternoon chasing their opponent down from behind.

Reagan Todd - who had made all nine of his previous appearances out of the bullpen - was immediately put to the fire by the top of the Bruin order, allowing the first two batters to reach safely before Sean Bouchard’s double plated the afternoon’s first run.

Todd walked the bases full before facing Chase Strumpf - setting the table for the game-turning at-bat. Strumpf connected on a 1-0 fastball, spraying a double to the left-center field wall and scoring all three runners. A bases-loaded walk from Todd enlarged the first-inning damage, and ASU entered the bottom half of the first down 5-0.

This is not a new trend for ASU. At the conclusion of the the UCLA series, Arizona State has now allowed its opponent to score first in 18 of the season’s 26 games. The Sun Devils have a 9-8 record in those games, and even hold a 5-6 clip when they’ve given up a tally in the first frame.

But if Sunday’s game serves a microcosm, there’s nothing sustainable about playing from behind.

“If it happens enough, what happens - you start to expect to get scored upon,” Smith said. “And that’s something we’re battling particularly as a young team. None of that stuff matters. It’s a new game, it’s a new whatever - but you don’t ever want to expect bad stuff to happen.”

The Sun Devils couldn’t earn the series win on Sunday.

It was a run parade for the UCLA Bruins who hustled around the bases as though they were college basketball players up and down the court on the Final Four’s hardwood in just 23 miles northeast of Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Arizona State (12-14, 2-7 Pac-12) lost 17-4 to UCLA, unable to capture its first Pac-12 series win, after dropping Sunday afternoon’s rubber match.

Five Bruins circled around the diamond, as ASU starter Reagan Todd battled through the first inning. It took the left-hander seven batters to secure the first out of the inning, already with the Sun Devils drowning in runs, 5-0.

“I thought we did a really poor job to set the table,” said ASU manager Tracy Smith. “It was even a little evident in pregame... When I watched infield, I could tell right then. We pulled them into the locker room and said ‘this isn’t right.’”

In just 1 2⁄3 innings, right-hander Ryan Hingst allowed three runs before his replacement, also a righty, Alec Marsh, gave up five.

Garvin Alston allowed no runs over his first two innings before the Bruins piled on three more in the top of the ninth inning. Grant Schneider finished off the rest of the contest giving up no runs to end the top of the ninth.

“There was a big separation [in runs] pretty darn quickly,” Smith said. “When we’re chasing so many runs, it just got away in a hurry.”

All nine starting batters earned hits for UCLA, and 16 of the Bruins’ 17 runs came in the first five hitters in the lineup.

In Arizona State’s lineup, just four batters earned hits.

Two of Arizona State’s seven hits cleared the fences. Andrew Shaps rocketed a solo shot over the deep right-center field wall and Zach Cerbo’s solo home run was knocked over opposite field to straightaway right field.

Cerbo, who caught all 27 innings of the series and along with his home run, went 2-for-4 with a double in the series finale.

“One of the positive takeaways from this weekend is Zach Cerbo being a senior,” Smith said. “He lays it on the line. I don’t think anyone could question whether that kid was in the game from start to finish. And we need more guys doing that.”

The Sun Devils’ third and fourth runs came in the eighth inning off an RBI double from Tyler Williams and Taylor Lane scoring on a fielding error on a sharply hit ball from Jackson Willeford.

UCLA starter Jon Olsen’s crafty mound work was much of the reason for Arizona State’s quiet day at the plate. The right-handed sophomore gave up two runs on three hits in 6 2⁄3 innings.

“It seems like we’ve been playing from behind early a lot. It’s tough on the offense,” Smith said. “There’s a difference between hitting in a game and the pitcher on the other side, and which we haven’t done a lot is have our pitchers pitch with a lead. They’re a lot more comfortable.”

Taylor Lane, who went 5-for-8 with a run and an RBI in the series’ first two games, failed to earn another multi hit game, finishing 1-for-3. Gage Canning, who entered the contest on a five-game hit streak, struck out swinging twice going 0-for-2 as well in Sunday’s defeat.

It was Arizona State’s largest losing margin since falling 18-4 to then-No. 20 Oklahoma State on Feb. 21, and its worst Pac-12 loss since getting blown out 31-9 in the final game of 2016’s regular season against USC.

The Sun Devils look to regain momentum moving further into conference play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when ASU visits Arizona (19-7, 4-4) who ranks fifth in the conference.

“For us right now, the position that we’ve put ourselves in, much like last year,” Smith said. “It was about this time. We don’t have a lot of margin for error in terms of the NCAA tournament, so every game is important, we just talked about that. Every game is basically our national tournament.”

The Sun Devils bounced back with a win on Saturday night.

PHOENIX — Lyle Lin’s first-career homer capped a two-RBI night that propelled Arizona State to a 5-4 win over the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night.

The Sun Devils (12-13, 2-6 Pac-12) scored all five of their runs between the sixth and seventh innings, and the output proved just enough to escape with their second conference victory of the year.

“When you pitch and you play defense — that’s the formula,” head coach Tracy Smith said. “You throw strikes, you play good defense, you’re probably gonna be in position to win a baseball game.”

While nine total runs and 21 total hits between the two teams will suggest otherwise, Phoenix Muni played host to what was a pitcher’s duel through the game’s first five innings.

The Sun Devils had a tough time at the plate against Bruins starting pitcher Moises Ceja. The senior right-hander tossed 5 2⁄3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out six and issuing no walks. He held ASU batters to one hit through four innings.

Having proven before he’s up to a challenge, Sun Devils starter Chaz Montoya matched Ceja’s showing. The true freshman, making his second-career start, tossed a career-high 6 1⁄3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three batters and walking none.

“Just pound the zone,” Montoya said of his approach. “When I go out there, I’m going to compete and do everything I can to help this team win.”

The southpaw retired eight consecutive batters at one point, and struck out lead-off batters in three of the seven frames he opened.

“I thought he threw the baseball really, really well,” Smith said. “Guys like playing behind him because he pound the strike zone.”

The strong pitching performance from both starters made way for an explosive finish through the game’s final three innings.

In the sixth, the Bruins pushed across the first run of the contest on a two-out RBI single by center fielder Daniel Amaral, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead.

ASU’s offense responded with two runs in the bottom half of the segment, drawing even on first baseman Lyle Lin’s first-career home run, a solo shot over the wall in left field.

Smith said he initially thought it was a “no-doubt” home run that ended up being the difference in the outcome Saturday.

“That was the energizer for us, no question,” Smith said. “There wasn’t a lot of activity, a lot of life going on. He put a charge in the team.”

ASU then took a 2-1 lead on an RBI triple by left fielder Ryan Lillard to close the frame.

The teams would trade runs once again in the seventh. An RBI double by third baseman Ryan Kriedler evened the score at 2-2, before a two-RBI double by catcher Daniel Rosica gave UCLA a 4-2 advantage in the top half of the inning.

Out of the stretch, two-out RBI singles from Andrew Shaps, Lin and Taylor Lane gave ASU a 5-4 lead.

Lane’s hit was his third of the night, batting in the cleanup spot after batting seventh on Friday.

“He’s swinging a good bat,” Smith said. “We wanna bring him up a little bit more and put more consistent ABs in that spot. I thought he looked really, really good tonight.”

“The main thing is getting my at-bats and feeling good,” Lane said.

The Sun Devils finished the evening batting 7-for-15 (.467) with two outs, 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position, and 6-for-13 (.462) with runners on base.

“If we keep hitting like we did tonight, we’re gonna have some success,” Montoya said.

The success, at least tonight, was not only immediate, but crucial in providing enough room for potential error on the mound.

Left-hander Connor Higgins , who had entered in relief of Montoya, was pulled after giving up back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the eighth.

Senior righty Eder Erives took the mound inheriting the trouble, and make quick work of the threat, inducing a fly out to center before starting a 1-6-3 double play to maintain ASU’s one-run lead.

Erives would concede a one-out walk in the ninth, but managed to capture the result for ASU, simultaneously registering his second save of the season in the process.

The Sun Devils will return to Muni with a chance to win the series against UCLA on Sunday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 12:30 p.m. PT. Freshman left-hander Spencer Van Scoyoc (0-1, 2.92 ERA) is expected to start for ASU.

Notes

Catcher Zac Cerbo caught two runners stealing tonight. He threw out Sean Bouchard to end the top of the first, then Ryan Kreidler to end the top of the third. He is now up to six runners caught stealing, now a team-leading mark.

Lyle Lin has reached base in 24 of 25 games this season, and 11-consecutive. He extended a career-long eight-game hitting streak on his first-career home run in the bottom of the sixth that tied the game.

Smith said starting pitcher Chaz Montoya tweaked a muscle in his back, and the team debated pulling him out before he started the seventh, but “he’s fine” before describing him as an “anatomical anomaly.”

The Sun Devils paid mightily for their mistakes on Friday night.

Leading up to Friday’s Pac-12 matchup against UCLA, Arizona State’s Eli Lingos had allowed a minuscule eight walks in six starts.

After just the second inning against the Bruins, his walk total grew to double digits, issued three walks in the inning that sparked three UCLA runs. Most notably, handing UCLA an RBI walk.

Two more walks and 3 1⁄3 innings later, Lingos’s night ended after giving up just two earned runs in 5 1⁄3 innings.

All four Sun Devil pitchers who took the mound on Friday night exited giving up a walk. Two of them walked in UCLA runs.

Jake Godfrey relieved for Lingos tossing 1 1⁄3 scoreless innings, the Sun Devils (11-13, 1-6 Pac-12) were down 4-3, and everything unraveled. Facing 11 batters, Chris Isbell allowed five runs in the final inning with both of his walks coming in the ninth skyrocketing his ERA to 27.00.

In each inning the Sun Devils allowed a walk, a run scored en route to a 9-3 defeat.

Walks lead to runs. They lead to more pitches, more laziness on the field and ultimately more base runners, but Arizona State head coach Tracy Smith didn’t see free bases as the issue on Friday night.

“He wasn’t our problem tonight even with the inconsistent command,” said Smith. “Our issue right now is finding guys who can field a baseball and make a play.”

Between the lines of Friday’s run-polluted second and ninth innings, not only were there five walks, but two costly errors.

On a sharply hit grounder from the easiest out in UCLA’s lineup, Zander Clarke, shortstop Carter Aldrete misthrew a ball to Taylor Lane at third, putting runners at the corners with only an out. Clarke entered the game with a .125 batting average, the worst in the order.

That led to two straight RBI singles and an ominous RBI walk.

Four clutch UCLA hits led to the majority of the Bruins’ explosive, five-run ninth inning, but an error could have been avoided.

While left fielder Hunter Bishop had a two-RBI day at the plate against one of the Pac-12’s elite pitchers, Jake Bird (1.20 ERA), a ninth-inning error on a grounder that tipped off the front of his glove, springing away from his arm’s grasp, reminded Smith what his team needs to exercise.

“It’s just our issues to me aren’t the offensive piece, taking care of the baseball and then playing baseball at a higher level defensively,” Smith said. “Right now we’re not doing it. That is our issue.”

The Sun Devils have the second-worst fielding percentage (.963) and error total (34) in the conference coming into Friday night’s game against UCLA. Their 36 season errors almost doubles the Bruins’ season total of 19.

Smith and his young group will have some work to do, as ASU will try to even up the series on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m.

Recap from the Sun Devils’ loss to UCLA.

A dominant performance from Bruins right-hander Griffin Canning and a poor defensive performance by the Sun Devils helped UCLA (12-11, 5-2 Pac-12) defeat Arizona State (11-13, 1-6), 9-3, Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The junior finished with nine strikeouts, three walks and just two earned runs through 7 1⁄3 innings, often baffling ASU hitters by pairing elite velocity on his fastball with devastating movement on his slider deep into counts.

The Sun Devils’ ace, junior Eli Lingos (3-2, 3.07 ERA), also had a productive night in the first of three games against the Bruins. The southern California native left the game after 5 2⁄3 innings, finishing with four strikeouts, two earned runs and a season-high five walks.

Lingos and the Sun Devil defense struggled early on, as the Bruins took a commanding lead in the top of the second.

UCLA freshman Kyle Cuellar drew a walk to lead off the inning, advanced to third via a fielder’s choice and an error by ASU shortstop Carter Aldrete, then came around to score on an RBI single by Bruins second baseman Chase Strumpf. UCLA would add two more runs in the inning, with Lingos allowing another RBI single and two walks that pushed across a run.

Following the game, Smith spoke on why he thought Lingos struggled with his command, but emphasized that the defense needs to improve to help his pitching staff.

“I think there was a little bit of frustration, but he wasn’t our problem tonight,” Smith said. “Our issue right now is finding a combination of guys that can field a baseball.”

A sacrifice fly from ASU freshman Hunter Bishop in the bottom of the third scored Gage Canning and brought some life to the Sun Devils, but they struggled to sustain any kind of offensive momentum in Friday night’s contest, failing to score more than one run in any frame.

Smith mentioned the team’s hitting struggles in high-leverage situations.

“Those were some of our worst at bats of the game,” Smith said. “When we had a chance to score a run.”

After regaining his command in the top of the third, Lingos struggled with it once again in the fourth. The junior allowed a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch, creating an opportunity for UCLA with runners in scoring position. Bruins center fielder Daniel Amaral then stepped to the plate and singled to extend the lead 4-1.

Arizona State would get one back in the fifth courtesy of a Bishop RBI single, and added another in the eighth when Jackson Willeford scored on an Aldrete sacrifice fly, trimming UCLA’s lead to 4-3.

However, the Devils failed to sustain any momentum, as the eighth inning marked the third frame of the night in which ASU could muster only one run.

While the Devils’ offense had brought the team within one, ASU’s bullpen collapsed in the top half of the final frame. UCLA managed four hits, two walks and five earned runs in the ninth, increasing the Bruins’ lead to six and solidifying UCLA’s 9-3 victory.

The Sun Devils and Bruins will take the field in game two of the three-game series tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. MT, as freshman Chaz Montoya will take the mound for Arizona State looking to build upon his 5 2⁄3 inning shutout last weekend in Los Angeles.
